The Office of Personnel Management is recommending teleworking for agencies Aug. 4-6, to avoid road restrictions and delays caused by the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit.
The summit may be the largest event any President has held with African governments, according to a memo released by the Chief Human Capital Officers Council. Due to the size of the event, OPM expects heavy traffic congestion in the city during the three days.
OPM encouraged federal employees to follow local news for street closures and other disruptions caused by the event and make arrangements for their commute. It also suggested that employees try to adjust their work schedules around the event whenever possible.
OPM urged agency leaders to approve telework requests, leave and other paid time off during the three days. Agencies should also keep consistent communication with workers to inform them of any changes caused by the event.
“Employees may be given the option to use their alternative work schedule days off, take annual leave, or use previously earned compensatory time off and/or earned credit hours under a flexible work schedule (if permitted under agency policies),” the memo stated.
The probable traffic will come as leaders from various African countries meet with President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., to “strengthen ties between the United States and one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest growing regions,” according to the White House website.
“I do not see the countries and peoples of Africa as a world apart; I see Africa as a fundamental part of our interconnected world — partners with America on behalf of the future we want for all of our children,” Obama said, regarding the event. “That partnership must be grounded in mutual responsibility and mutual respect.”
